The Decision to Write

WHAT’S YOUR MOTIVATION?

When people ask themselves why they want to write, they usually land on things like:

  • Getting recognized as a legit author
  • Building up their personal brand
  • Making some money
  • Adding something valuable to their field
  • Making a real difference in the world
  • Establishing themselves as an expert in their area

WHAT’S YOUR GOAL?

What are you actually trying to do here?

  • Get people to think or act differently
  • Entertain people, teach them something, or both
  • Share what you know about your area of expertise
  • Tell a story that needs to be told
  • Write about your own life experiences
  • Tell someone else’s story
  • Inspire kids or help them learn
  • Whatever else drives you!

Research shows that money isn’t a great motivator. Plus, there’s no guarantee you’ll make money, and if you’re self-publishing, you’re actually going to spend money upfront.

Write down your motivation and your goals. Then, whenever you’re feeling stuck or losing faith in yourself (and trust me, that will happen), pull it out and read it. It will remind you why you started this journey in the first place and help you push through to the finish line.
